Bowdoin College Museum of Art: Second Graders Draw on the Museum Experience to Gain Visual Literacy Skills
During the first three Tuesdays in November all second grade classes traveled to the Bowdoin College Museum of Art with Ms. Agell, our literacy enrichment teacher, and me, Mrs. Higgison. During the summer, Ms. Agell and I did " summer work" with the goal of offering our second graders the opportunity to enrich their visual literacy via interaction with original works of art, in the intimate settings of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, a small but world class institution. If you have never been there, or if you have you know, the BCMA is a true gem of a museum, always free and open to the public and we encourage you all to visit it at some point with your kids; they are all qualified to be your junior docents and had some strong opinions about the works on view.

In the Bowdoin Gallery students did a token activity, looking at paintings and deciding on who they'd like to have lunch , and placing a heart infront of that painting and who they would not want to and placing an x on the floor in front of that painting. We then shared our reasons.
Approaching the paintings in this visual opinion point of view allowed for the young visitors to engage, form opinions and have some discussions based on what they saw.
