Creating Community through Art

Creating Community: Making Dots and an Ishy Word Wall

Our first two weeks have flown by and all classes have read or, watched, Peter Reynold's empowering books, The Dot and Ish . I have sent home more extensive introduction on all this so shall try and keep it brief here. Y.E.S. was registered as a participant in this year's International Dot Day, where more than 6.4 million artists around the world were read The Dot and made art inspired by it. Every student, and this week every staff member, has now made their mark, each creating their own unique dot for the hallway.  The effect is truly inspiring.  And pictures are worth 1000 words.....but are even nicer in person....Here are some photos of dots and following the Ishy Word Wall, that lives outside the art studio. Super fun drawings and imaginative words.  Definitely worth a visit when next you are in the school.

Welcome to the Art Studio September 2016

Welcome to the Art Studio from Mrs. Higgison:

Looking forward to meeting new students and reconnecting with others.  I have tweaked the Art Studio a wee bit with new curtains and a beautiful artsy rug to make gathering for mini-lessons more comfortable.
We are going to start the year, as I do every year by watching The Dot, by Peter Reynolds and then each "making our marks" by creating a unique dot, signing our names to them and then decorating the central hallway of Y.E.S. with them.  If you are not familiar with The Dot, ask your child after their first art class to share the story with you. Basically it is a story that reminds us that it is important, as a teacher to meet our children where they are at, and help them to grow and find their own unique style.   Around the world artists and art teachers have been inspired by the story and September 15th is now, "International Dot Day", and millions of artists, like the artists of Y.E.S. will participate by creating unique dots, making their marks and celebrating imagination and creative thinking.
